Refraline presented its paper at the 2026 International SAIMM Pyrometallurgy Conference, titled: “Transition from Tar and Resin-Bonded to Synthetic Binder-based Taphole Clays: Health, Environmental, and Operational Performance in Ferroalloy Smelters”, authored by Krog, J., Makosa, T., Newall, G., Rösch, M. and Vilakazi, J.
This technical paper examines the transition from conventional tar- and resin-bonded taphole clays to Refraline’s synthetic binder-based alternatives. Laboratory testing and field trials at ferroalloy smelters demonstrated an approximately 99% reduction in volatile organic compounds, significantly lower worker exposure to coal-tar pitch volatiles, and reliable operational performance. The findings show that synthetic binder technology can maintain effective taphole sealing, drillability and high-temperature durability while supporting safer workplaces, reduced environmental impact and more sustainable smelting operations.
